Each ghost in this work represents one of the five states of Appalachia-proper (West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee)... the names written on it are towns that are either true ghost towns or towns that have experienced dramatic decline since the early 20th century. I made this while on a "walkabout" in western Virginia and West Virginia.
