In the silhouette of an "everywoman," I've depicted wild plants traditionally used by women in the southern Appalachian hills as medicine. Pieces of bark from local trees frame her, with a hand-painted map behind. The piece honors all the women in this region—both historic and present—who heal with herbs. I thank wildcrafter Carrie Sparks of Marion, Virginia, for showing me many of these plants in their natural habitat.
