As someone who was raised in evangelical churches in Appalachia, the use of faith and focus on divine reward as a means to comfort and placate the working class is a thought that regularly crosses my mind. Too often, meaningfully examining and addressing systemic suffering, injustice, and violence is either ignored as an option to improve the plight of the working class altogether or is considered incompatible with the hierarchical and punitive demands of the United States.
